1986 José Mª Martín Patino

José Mª Martín Patino, Jesuit priest and writer. José Mª Martín Patino, as he tells us, Born in Lumbrales, match Vitigudino, capital Abadengo, likes to tell my countrymen, very close to the Arribes del Duero, year 1925, during the dictatorship of General Primo de Rivera. My daughter six years keeps alive the day of the proclamation of the Republic. My parents, both teachers and fervent Catholics, we were locked at home to pray for Spain. My father was the director of the Graduate School, as it was then called. A huge U-shaped atrium ordered all classrooms. In the center was plenty of room for the pelota court and other sports. The winter winds that courtyard crossed in all directions. There was no heating. There was only fed brazier typical oak cisco. Some transported from home one warmers with a charcoal inside a perforated tin with a thousand holes in the lid. Today enjoy the lumbralenses two modern buildings which house the Institute. The poles of our family life was the school and the parish church. Everyday, good morning, my parents and six brothers were preparing to go together to the school. In the evenings we appealed to the parish to pray the rosary. At home we had a good library with a collection of Spanish classics and abundant lives of the saints and ascetical and mystical writings. the days of vacation and especially in the summer, My father could not see us idle without a book in his hands. As Christmas drew a childish game lottery. In the game of Parcheesi was more gracious and allowed us to play until dinner time. The bad news of violence and persecution of the Church arriving from Madrid daily through "The Future Century", did suffer much for my father. They were dense times of division and confrontation that reverberated among people from the same village. My mother, woman of great character and very active, carrying the weight of the house helped a "maid" and "rolla". Often came Mrs. Manuela, seamstress who worked one or more days at home until he managed clothes six brothers. Also made some delicious wafers and everyone had a second mother. Also the shoemaker came home and checked one by one all shoes. Killing two pigs every year in winter was a party. War broke 1936. The three older brothers had already started high school and went slowly losing touch with the people. But the uprising of Franco's troops surprised us on summer vacation Lumbrales. After dinner my father pulled the window came a primitive radio and a good group of friends to get some fresh air and hear the war report. When "National" taking a city like Toledo Badajoz or demonstrations were organized to the Town Hall Square where ever there was any spontaneous commenting victory. Now, when I return Lumbrales I find a distinct people. The herreriana Church, with its mass of granite, still stands in silhouette landscape. Inside it has been remarkably restored. Desencalada, Total his stony beauty to your walls and arches. All the village streets have been paved and running water reaches all households.
