"La
Ribera Alta" has an extension of 841.87 Km2 and a total
of around 300.000 inhabitants. Alzira is the administrative capital
of this region and its territory is bigger than 111' 46 km2. Alzira
is limited by Guadasuar, Algemesí and Poliñá
in the North side; Tavernes, Benifairó, Simat and Carcaixent
in the South; Corbera, Llaurí and Favareta in the East and
Benimuslem, Alberic and Massalavés in the West.
Alzira has
nowadays 41.083 inhabitants. The city is placed between 14 and 20
m. over the level of the sea and between the meridians 3º10'
and 3º23' West longitude and the parallels of North latitude
39º4' and 39º11'.
The nucleus
of the city is mostly at the right side of the river and it is formed
by a central and modern nucleus (old bed of the rivers Júcar
and Barcheta and old suburb of St Augustine); an old part called
"La Villa", and "Las Barracas" (old St. Mary's
suburb), "la Alquerieta", "la Montañeta",
"el Torrechó", "la Garrofera" and "la
Barraca de Aguas Vivas".
Orographically,
it is worth mentioning the mountains of "Corbera", "la
Murta" and "las Agujas", and we can also find the
valleys of "la Murta", "la Casella" and "Aguas
Vivas" between them, with a maximum highs in the "Tallat
Roig" (394m.), "la Creu del Cardenal" (543m.), "les
Orelles d'Ase" (592m.) and "la Ratlla" (625m.)
The climate
in Alzira is typically Mediterranean, soft and temperate, and normally
without extreme temperatures in winter nor in summer. There is not
much rain, and if so, they are very irregular, due to the torrential
rains that follow a long drought period.
Alzira presents excellent communication links which facilitate the
access from any direction.
The motorway
from Valencia to Xàtiva comes between the region from North
to South, and from there, there is a road to Favareta. There is
also railway from Valencia to Almansa. From East to West you can
find the road from Tavernes de Valldigna to Lliria passing through
Chiva.
